Debt Management Plans

Debt Management Plans

The temptations of getting into debt are well known to many of us. The high credit limits given out on many credit cards can be irresistible. They enable us to buy something now and worry about how we will pay for it later.

But this method of thinking can get you into big trouble. Lots of people have come unstuck like this and ended up being in debt to the tune of thousands of pounds on several different credit cards.

Of course credit cards are not the only pitfall. But if you are in debt at the moment you may want to look into the possibilities offered by debt management plans. They could get you out of trouble.

What are debt management plans?

These are plans that are designed to help you get out of debt without getting into it any further.

Let’s explain this a little more. Suppose you have credit card debts that require you to pay back a minimum of £340 a month that you simply don’t have. Clearly something has to be done, and if you don’t address the problem the late payment charges and interest will continue to make the amount you owe increase.

This is where debt management plans come in. They are essentially proper repayment programmes that enable you to pay back everything you owe without getting into any further trouble. You don’t have to become bankrupt and you won’t get out of paying your debts. Instead you come to an agreement with your creditors to pay back a lesser amount each month until the debt is repaid in full.

Can you create debt management plans on your own?

You can, but most people who are in need of real assistance when it comes to paying their debts enlist the help of another agency.

Typically speaking you will visit the agency to tell them about your situation. You will need to show how much disposable income you have each month. This should really be at least £100.

From that point the debt management agency you have gone to will contact all your creditors to pay them each month. This makes life easier for you because you don’t have to contact your creditors directly.

You can also contact agencies such as the Citizens Advice Bureau for assistance, although they will not handle the payments for you. You can take either approach to reach the same ends, but creditors tend to prefer you having the input of a professional agency of some kind. If you approach them on your own and say you want to pay less each month, it could be more difficult to manage the repayment plan.

Can debt management plans get you out of debt?

Yes they can, and this is what they are designed for. But with that said they are not a quick fix. You must understand that you are still responsible for paying back everything you owe.

And of course, the idea is not to get into the same situation again in future.
